Close-up well acted JULIUS CAESAE-- great homeschool use
| Saw this 1953 JULIUS CAESAR directed by the great film maker of black & white intrigues--Joseph L Mankiewica.
You quickly get drawn into the many political moral schemes, plans, etc. (In a few minutes, I forgot I was listening to the old Shakespearean words---the closeups of these stunning actors saying and acting out the intrigues of 44 BC Rome...pulled me in.) This wonderful black & white movie reminded me of the old black & white Sir Laurence Olivier HAMLET we saw in high school. Wonderful! (Wish someone would package some of the best old Shakespearean movies on DVD for home, school, and homeschool...) Marlon Brando is a great young, intense Marc Antony. Sir John Gielgud--the manipulative Cassius--Louis Calhern (someone I knew only by sight from some movies) is a fine Caesar--and... the key role of Brutus is played by James Mason. (He was cast many times as the tormented man. This is one of his best tormented man roles I hve seen him in---You believe him as the fatherly like man to his young servant boy---as the kind but distracted husband --and as the leader who truly sought to do a bad deed for the noblest of reasons.) Thus, Marc Antony's speech about Brutus in whom "the elements were so mixed in him..." fits so well... Greer Garson and Deborah Kerr, two great actresses, play Caesar's wife & Brutus's wife respectively in these small, but key roles. Put it on the AMAZON NOTIFY ME WHEN IT'S ON DVD FINALLY! buy list! Julius Caesar is as timeless as political intrigues and moral dilemmas.
All Hail Caesar!!! | ||||||
| and this magnificent production of one the Bard's most memorable plays. This movie boasts an all star cast, and each do a splendid job of portraying their characters, my favorite being John Geilgud, one of the all-time great Shakespearean actors who's Cassius is an emotional biolerplate of envy. James Mason's Brutus is his friend and exact emotional opposite: a self-controlled, even-tempered, honor-loving man. Watching the interplay of these two opposites was for me the most thrilling part of the movie. I can't imagine any actors playing these roles other than Mason and Geilgud. Also, Brando's Mark Antony was marvelous to behold. How he skillfully moves the crowd to riot was nothing less than a virtuoso display of acting that proves Brando to be the genius that he was.
If you like Shakespeare, and particularly 'Julius Caesar', but haven't seen this one yet, BUY IT, you won't be disappointed.
